Classic cosmopolitan cocktail with vodka, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, and triple sec. Perfectly balanced, beautifully pink, and absolutely delicious!

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cocktail 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 ounces vodka (or citrus vodka)
  • 1 ounce cranberry juice cocktail
  • ½ ounce fresh lime juice (about ½ lime)
  • ½ ounce triple sec or Cointreau
  • Ice (for shaking)
  • Lime wheel or twist (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Chill Glass: Place your martini glass or coupe in the freezer for at least 5 minutes before making the drink. A chilled glass keeps the cocktail colder longer and looks elegant with that frosty appearance.
  2. Juice Fresh Lime: Cut lime in half and juice to get ½ ounce (about 1 tablespoon) of fresh juice. Strain out seeds if desired.

Mix the Cocktail:

  1. Fill Shaker with Ice: Fill your cocktail shaker about ¾ full with ice. You want plenty of ice for thorough chilling and proper dilution.
  2. Add All Ingredients: Pour the vodka (1.5 ounces), cranberry juice (1 ounce), fresh lime juice (½ ounce), and triple sec (½ ounce) into the shaker with ice.
  3. Shake Vigorously: Seal your shaker tightly and shake hard for 10-15 seconds. You want to shake until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty cold to the touch. The vigorous shaking properly chills the drink and provides slight dilution that’s essential for balance.
  4. Taste and Adjust (Optional): If you want to check the flavor balance before serving, strain a tiny bit into a spoon to taste. Too tart? Add a splash more cranberry juice or ¼ ounce simple syrup. Not tart enough? Add a tiny squeeze more lime. Too strong? Add a bit more cranberry juice.

Serve:

  1. Strain into Glass: Remove your chilled glass from the freezer. Using a Hawthorne strainer (or the built-in strainer if using cobbler shaker), carefully strain the cosmopolitan into the chilled glass. The drink should be clear, pink, and beautifully chilled.
  2. Garnish: Add your chosen garnish—a lime wheel perched on the rim, a lime twist dropped in the drink, or for extra flair, a flamed orange peel (express oils over the drink, then discard).
  3. Serve Immediately: Cosmopolitans are best enjoyed immediately while ice-cold and while all flavors are bright and fresh.

Notes

  • Fresh Lime Juice Essential: Never use bottled—the flavor difference is dramatic.
  • Cranberry Juice Type: Regular cranberry juice cocktail is standard; 100% cranberry is very tart (use less).
  • Citrus Vodka Recommended: Absolut Citron or Ketel One Citroen elevates this drink.
  • Cointreau vs. Triple Sec: Cointreau is smoother; triple sec works fine for budget-friendly version.
  • Adjust Proportions: Taste and adjust to your preference—some prefer slightly more tart, some slightly sweeter.
  • Batch for Parties: Multiply ingredients, mix in pitcher, shake individual portions with ice when serving.
