This classic homemade banana split recipe creates a stunning, restaurant-quality dessert in just fifteen minutes. Featuring a perfectly sliced banana topped with three complementary ice cream flavors, silky chocolate and strawberry syrups, fluffy whipped cream, and festive toppings, this iconic dessert is as beautiful as it is delicious. Perfect for special occasions, celebrations, or whenever you crave something spectacular.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 1 banana split (serves 1-2) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Banana Split Base:

  • 1 medium banana, perfectly ripe with slight firmness
  • 1 scoop premium vanilla ice cream (about ½ cup)
  • 1 scoop strawberry ice cream (about ½ cup)
  • 1 scoop chocolate ice cream (about ½ cup)

For the Sauces and Toppings:

  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup or hot fudge sauce
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry syrup or fresh strawberry sauce
  • ¼ cup whipped cream (homemade or store-bought)
  • 3 tablespoons crushed roasted nuts (walnuts, pecans, or peanuts)
  • 2 tablespoons colorful sprinkles (rainbow or chocolate)
  • 1 maraschino cherry with stem
  • Optional: sliced fresh strawberries, chocolate shavings, additional toppings of choice

Instructions

  • Prepare your workspace. Get your banana split boat dish (or serving dish of choice) ready. If possible, chill it in the freezer for 5 minutes—a cold dish helps keep ice cream from melting too quickly.
  • Choose your banana carefully. Select a medium banana that’s ripe but still slightly firm. You want enough firmness that the banana will slice cleanly without falling apart, but enough ripeness that it tastes sweet and flavorful.
  • Slice the banana lengthwise. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the banana in half lengthwise. Place the two banana halves in the chilled boat dish, creating a valley down the center. The banana should form the base and frame for your ice cream.
  • Position the banana halves. Arrange them so they cup gently toward the center, creating a natural channel where ice cream can nestle. This isn’t just for presentation—it also prevents the ice cream from rolling around.
  • Scoop your ice cream scoops. Using an ice cream scoop, place one generous scoop of vanilla ice cream in the center of the banana valley. Position it between the two banana halves so it’s well supported. Vanilla is traditionally in the middle because it’s the most neutral and allows the other flavors to shine.
  • Add strawberry ice cream. Scoop strawberry ice cream and place it on one side of the vanilla ice cream (traditionally on the left). Position it carefully so all three scoops are stable and create a visually balanced presentation.
  • Add chocolate ice cream. Scoop chocolate ice cream and place it on the other side of the vanilla ice cream (traditionally on the right). Now you have your three classic ice cream flavors arranged beautifully.
  • Drizzle chocolate syrup. Pour approximately 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup in a decorative pattern over the chocolate ice cream scoop and some onto the vanilla. Create beautiful lines or patterns—this is an artistic step!
  • Drizzle strawberry syrup. Pour approximately 2 tablespoons of strawberry syrup over the strawberry ice cream scoop, again in a decorative pattern. The contrast of the red strawberry syrup and dark chocolate syrup is visually stunning.
  • Add whipped cream crowns. Dollop approximately ¼ cup of whipped cream on top of each ice cream scoop, or create one large crown over the center. Use a spoon to create attractive peaks and swirls in the whipped cream.
  • Top with crushed nuts. Sprinkle approximately 3 tablespoons of crushed roasted nuts across the whipped cream and ice cream. This adds crunch and sophistication to every bite. Toast nuts lightly beforehand if possible for enhanced flavor.
  • Add colorful sprinkles. Scatter about 2 tablespoons of colorful sprinkles across the top for that festive, fun appearance. Sprinkles add visual appeal and a little bit of texture.
  • Crown with a maraschino cherry. Place one perfect maraschino cherry with its stem on top of the whipped cream. This is the finishing touch that makes it instantly recognizable as a banana split.
  • Add optional garnishes. If desired, add fresh strawberry slices, chocolate shavings, or any other special toppings that match your preferences and theme.
  • Serve immediately. Present your banana split to your lucky recipient immediately. The contrast of cold ice cream, cool banana, and the visual spectacle makes this moment special. Encourage eating with a combination spoon and fork so you can enjoy the banana, ice cream, and sauces together in every bite.

Notes

  • Make it a two-scoop variation: Some people prefer smaller portions. You can reduce this to one scoop each of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate for a lighter version, or increase to two scoops per flavor for an extra-indulgent version.
  • Customize the ice cream flavors: While vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate are traditional, feel free to use your favorite flavors. Mint chocolate chip, butter pecan, and coffee create an equally delicious combination.
  • Sauce flexibility: You could use hot fudge sauce instead of chocolate syrup for extra decadence, or substitute different fruit sauces for strawberry.
  • Topping variations: Add crushed Oreos, brownie pieces, or cookie crumbles for texture. Include fresh fruit like pineapple, mango, or raspberries for freshness.
  • Batch for parties: This recipe easily multiplies for groups. Simply prepare multiple banana splits using these same proportions.
